I went with a non-white friend to a non-white restaurant with a very spicy noodle soup that was somehow listed on the menu they give to non-spicy customers, and the non-white waiter warned me not in so many words that this spicy soup is not meant for people who are not non-white, but my non-white friend was hesitating too and so I thought what the hell, why not drown whatever whiteness I can drown in this soup which, when it arrived, felt perilously spicy but I’d started down this road already, thinking it might take me somewhere, and so spoonful after spoonful I slurped the soup, and later my nonwhite friend wrote about our spicy experience, labeling me as her “white friend” and I’ve proudly been her white friend ever since, except for a hint of spice that no one notices but me and I hope I get to keep.
